Dan Kelly

Artist: Dan Kelly of Yucca Valley, CA
Mural #15 - Desert Wildflowers

In spite of the high temperatures in May of 2000, with many days creeping over the 100-degree mark, artist Dan Kelly successfully planted an entire wall of desert spring wildflowers, against a backdrop of the giant rocks of Joshua Tree National Park. With assistance from his friend Al Donaldson, Kelly worked in the early morning hours and again in the evenings, to beat the heat, finishing the 12' x 60' painting in 19 days--the day before the May 20 dedication. This is the third nature-themed mural in Twentynine Palms' Oasis of Murals. This time, artist Kelly honored our beautiful Mojave Desert wildflowers in larger-than-life portraits of reds, yellows, whites, blues, and purples, representing the vibrant spring blooms of desert primroses, desert lilies, lupine, encelia, verbena, cacti, yuccas, ocotillo and other local flora. Some years produce more prolific wildflowers than others, depending upon the amount of rainfall in the preceding winter season. Even during dry years when the desert floor appears barren, blooms are usually evident in the high altitudes of neighboring Joshua Tree National Park, which is the backdrop for this mural.

Dan Kelly is a local artist from Yucca Valley, CA. His exciting mural "The Cattle Drive" can be seen on the east wall of the Water Canyon Coffee House at the corner of 29 Palms Highway and Pioneertown Road in the Town of Yucca Valley, CA. His most recent mural creation is a 12' x 8' "Gold Panning" mural on an exterior wall of Chuck Royal's Automotive shop in Yucca Valley. Kelly is also known for his pencil sketches, portraits, and western paintings, and has been called frequently to give demonstrations for the art classes at Copper Mountain College. Sixty-six years young, he is a graduate of the Art Center School of Design now located in Pasadena.
