Mural #14 - Desert Wildlife

On the fifth anniversary of the Twentynine Palms Mural Project, we celebrated the newest addition to our Oasis of Murals--Mural #14 "Desert Wildlife" by artist Chuck Caplinger. All wrapped up in a giant red bow (the entire 15' x 60' painted wall!), Caplinger's vignettes of giant desert critters were applauded by residents, visitors, mural fans and supporters at the bright and sunny afternoon dedication on Oct. 23rd, as Caplinger, Mayor Liz Meyer, and Action 29 President Pat Flynn performed the official ribbon cutting ceremony. Even Karl Schutz, our Mural Project godfather, came all the way from Chemainus, B.C., to attend the festivities and to acknowledge Caplinger for his fine work. The artwork was a stunning display of desert wildlife, with each desert animal painted in larger-than-life exquisite detail, using soft natural tones, contrasted by vivid fuschia-colored blooms of giant cactus. From the first giant raven swooping down from the top of the wall to the first leaping coyote painted with a glint in his eye, we knew this mural was going to be a spectacular tribute to our desert wildlife. As a finishing touch, the artist added real gold leaf painted lines along the full length of the mural's top edge, which sparkle in the afternoon sun on any given desert day.

Artist Chuck Caplinger was born and raised in Texas, then came to California and lived and worked in Hollywood before moving to Twentynine Palms in April 1997, with his actress wife Holgie Forrester. The former graphic artist, who at one time worked for NASA, then went on to do work for Lone Star Pictures and several small independent film companies, is now a full-time desert artist and muralist. He specializes in portraits, realistic desert oil paintings, as well as large-scale outdoor murals. Caplinger's love of the Southwest desert is evident in his oil paintings, which encompass serene desert landscapes, desert scenes, desert critters, cowboys, horses, pioneer stories and more, all framed in handmade old-wood frames, sometimes embellished with historic objects. Caplinger not only works in oils, but is an accomplished muralist, now with 18 murals in cities across the United States. Besides Twentynine Palms murals #5 and #14, he has painted major murals in El Segundo, Montebello, and Indio in the Southern California area.
