"For or troops in Operation Iraqi Freedom"

"I had to talk myself into this one.", says artist Don Gray about the conflicting emotions over his new mural in 29 Palms. He didn't want to celebrate war, so he focused instead on the confusion of battle, anguished faces and bravery of our Marines from the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center who served (and still serve) in Operation Iraqi Freedom. 

The mural includes two historic scenes: toppling Sadam's statue in Bagdad (1st Tank Battalion) and rescuing Shoshana Johnson and the POW's (3rd L.A.R.). Gray was rewarded by many personal stories while painting the mural -- especially the Marine who said, "Hey, see that guy being carried off the field? That's me!" Gray said he was relieved to learn that the Marine was still alive.
