This exquisite mural of Mojave Desert flora and fauna couldn't have been painted by a better team than that of artists and naturalists Larry Eifert and Nancy Martin. Preferring to paint nature rather than people, the spirit of Eifert's philosophy is "Art for Nature's Sake." To that end, he has made a commitment to concentrate his remaining art years to painting nature. His scores of nature posters, calendars, cards, paintings and murals have become instructional tools for learning about the environment as well as beautiful art. And accuracy in his art is extremely important to Eifert. Before beginning this mural for the Twentynine Palms mural project, he spent days with Ranger Joe Zarki in Joshua Tree National Park pouring over his drawings to ensure the correctness of our native desert plant and animal species (he had over 100 plant species to choose from). The resulting impressive 86-foot-long desert scene was unveiled on May 13, 1995. Over the last two decades, Eifert has worked hand-in-hand with state parks and the National Park Service throughout the West and Northwest, the U.S. Dept. of Fish and Game, and wildlife protection/education groups and agencies to communicate, through his art, the value and beauty of our precious natural resources. Eifert was assisted on this project by his partner, Nancy Cherry Martin, who is an artist in her own right, as well as his longtime project researcher and promoter. This was the first time she had actually helped to paint a full-scale mural. |
