Tim O'Connor

Though Jack Cones was gone when the O'Connor family moved to Twentynine Palms in 1962, his memory was very much alive. When Tim O'Connor took his own flying lessons several years later, the stories told by Clara Cones and good friend Mary Cobb so intrigued the young artist that he decided

to someday create a visual tribute to Cones, perhaps in a magazine story. O'Connor never dreamed that the chance to honor the man he came to admire would be in the form of a world-class mural in a spectacular outdoor art gallery in his hometown. During the actual creation of this vibrant tribute to Jack Cones, numerous family members, friends, and locals were allowed to paint small sections of the mural--under the close scrutiny of the artist, of course; a video tape was filmed, documenting the start-to-finish making of a mural; and Friday night BBQs at the mural wall became a tradition during this time.

A former student of Twentynine Palms High School who married a native daughter, the former Pam Beller, O'Connor is a versatile artist and businessman. He heads O'Connor Graphics & Screenprinting with wife Pam, and they make their home with daughter Katie and son Keenan here in Twentynine Palms. O'Connor is also known for his political and editorial cartoons, some of which appear locally in The Sun Runner Magazine and The Desert Trail newspaper, along his Fergie & Floyd cartoon strip, and for his fine graphic illustrations and pen and ink art works. While the tribute to Jack Cones in 1996 was his first official mural undertaking, O'Connor was later commissioned to paint several subsequent murals, including four indoor murals aboard the Marine Corps Base and one for the Fantasy Springs Casino in Indio, CA, and returned to paint a second mural--Mural #9, Johnnie Hastie & The 29 Palms Stage--for the growing Oasis of Murals project in Twentynine Palms.
