Sculptor Steve Rieman of Yucca Valley, CA, poses in the photo above with Jim Woolsey of the Historical Society and Pat Flynn of Action Council for 29 Palms, Inc., at the dedication ceremony for his sculpture installation at the Old Schoolhouse Museum, Twentynine Palms, CA, on May 2, 1999. The three-panel copper and steel installation, "SkyClimbers," was created as a tribute to those rock climbers who have long benefitted from an intimate relationship with Joshua Tree National Park's topography and the hundreds of giant monzonite monoliths that can be found within its boundaries. Rieman wrote the following words to describe his SkyClimbers project: "The rock formations of this region had sacred meaning for the prehistoric people. Evidence exists that they gathered regularly at specific rock formations for ceremonies and that the rocks provided seasonal habitable shelters. Today, Joshua Tree rock climbers experience the ultimate balance between mind and body as they test themselves by climbing higher and reaching farther, taking care all the way." Steve Rieman's work asks questions about the balance between advancing technology and the preservation of the natural environment. Many of his works are in private and public collections in 20 states across the country, Puerto Rico, and Argentina. Some of Rieman's previous art installations include: "Between the Sun and the Moon" at San Dimas City Hall, "Living Desert Geo-Kinetic" in Palm Desert, and "Men and Women of Steel" sculptures on El Paseo Drive in Palm Desert, CA. Locally his sculptures can be seen at Copper Mountain College in Joshua Tree, the Oasis Visitor Center at Joshua Tree National Park, and Park Center Gallery in Joshua Tree. Rieman is a graduate of Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA. |
