Artist: John Whytock, Big Bear, CA |
John was commissioned to paint "The Dirty Sock Camp" in 1996. As he says in his own words, "The people of 29 Palms were wonderful. I was treated like a celebrity. From the beginning reception where I met every influential person in town--a General in the Marine Corps, the Mayor, various historians (official and unofficial) and all the colorful local personalities, like the Action Council folks--it was a great experience. Every artist should have something like this happen to them once in their life. Not only would they be made to feel at home, sign autographs all day, go to dinner parties in their honor and be treated so well, but they would also have the privilege of contributing something special and historically significant to a terrific town." |

As well as being an established commercial artist--having designed and illustrated book covers, movie posters, video programs, product lines and many other concerns in the commercial art world--John Whytock is also Las Vegas' premier mural artist. His work is prominently featured in many prestigious locations, including The Luxor, The Excalibur, The Monte Carlo, The Mandalay Bay, The Venetian, and many others. His most recent commission, completed in August 2000, is an 8' x 90' mural at the registration desk in the new Aladdin Resort and Casino. He is also an award-winning fine artist with a career that has spanned over three decades. He has been a featured artist in many important galleries throughout the United States, and his art is internationally published and collected around the world. |

In 1998 Whytock returned to Twentynine Palms to paint Mural #12 in collaboration with artist Terry Waite. Whytock lives in the Sugarloaf area of Big Bear, CA, with his wife of 28 years, Mary. It takes one and a half hours to get to Twentynine Palms, but he makes the drive frequently in order to spend time in one of his favorite spots on the planet. |
